Rights Management Service

Summary

Rights Management Services allows departments and individual users to protect their sensitive data and prevent unauthorized viewing, editing, and distribution of information.

About Rights Management

Rights Management Services augments Vanderbilt’s security strategy by applying protection to the information itself so it doesn’t matter where a document or email is moved or viewed. RMS can prevent sensitive information– such as reports, policy documents, and confidential email messages – from accidently being forwarded, altered, or read by unauthorized parties.  Protection is locked into the document itself controlling how information is used even after it has been opened by intended recipients.

Safeguarding Information

Applications such as word processors (MS Word), email clients (Outlook), and business applications (PowerPoint and Excel) can be RMS enabled to safeguard sensitive information. Users can define who may open, modify, print, forward, or take other actions with the information. Departments can create custom usage policy templates such as “confidential – read only” that can be directly applied to the information.

How to Use Rights Management

Rights Management Services are now available to ensure that Microsoft Office documents are only read or edited by specific users. This service encrypts documents or attachments to prevent un-authorized reading or content editing. Restrictions can be set to read-only, per page editing permission, and whole document password protection.
