Unmanaged Hosting

Service Description

A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a physical machine. The hypervisor separates the virtual machine from physical hardware dependencies and takes advantage of unused resources (memory, compute, and storage) by sharing them with multiple VMs. Virtualization provides resiliency, as virtual machines can be moved between hosts in the event of a host failure, minimizing or avoiding downtime for the guest virtual machine.

VUIT is only responsible for connectivity of the VM to the network. The VM will only be monitored for network availability. The customer is responsible for the licensing, installation, patches, and upgrades of the operating system and all applications. It is the customer's responsibility to schedule and perform backups and restores. Enterprise backup facilities may be used in consultation with VUIT Storage staff.

This service is available to Vanderbilt University faculty and staff.
