IMAP, POP3, and SMTP Settings

Introduction

The following information is provided for clients and devices that fall outside the list of VUIT supported clients for accessing the Vmail (Exchange 2007) environment. These clients and devices may include but are not limited to non-supported thick email clients, smart phones that do not use ActiveSync, and new products.

IMAP/POP3 Configuration

To configure your client/device to check for mail from the Vmail environment. Please use the following server settings for your incoming mail settings.

  • Email Address: your @vanderbilt.edu address
  • Username: your VUnetID (same for both incoming and outgoing)
  • Password: your e-password
  • Incoming Server: email.vanderbilt.edu Use SSL on port 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP. This may require viewing advanced settings.
  • Outogoing Server: smtpauth.vanderbilt.edu (see below)

SMTP Configuration

The Vanderbilt Exchange environment uses an authenticated SMTP service. One advantage is that authenticated SMTP does not use the standard SMTP port, which many ISPs block. The benefit to this configuration is that it can be used on the Vanderbilt network as well as on most ISPs without reconfiguring SMTP.

To set up the SMTP service input the following settings for your outgoing mail server.

  • Domain: Vanderbilt
  • Username (if there is no domain field): Vanderbilt\your VUnetID (same for both incoming and outgoing)
  • Server Name: smtpauth.vanderbilt.edu
  • Port: 587
  • Username: your VUnetID (same for both incoming and outgoing)
  • Password: your e-password
  • Secure Connection: TLS
  • Some clients may require a change from the default authentication method to "Normal Password"

Again, many of these settings may only be found in an advanced or manual setup section of the account settings.
