VUIT teams collaborate to provide support for Commencement week
During Commencement week in May 2017, VUIT's Relationship Management and Network Services teams provided support in a variety of forms for The Party, Senior Day, and Commencement itself.
VUIT provided both wired and wireless support for The Party, which is a celebration for graduates with their families and friends, on Wednesday, May 10. This year, Vanderbilt staff checked each attendee in using iPod scanners with the University Tickets application. Prior to the event, the Commencement Office approached VUIT's Relationship Management team with concerns regarding their proposed check-in locations, which were all outside and required a mixture of reliable wired and wireless connections for both ticketing and vending. Network Services configured temporary access points to grant the iPods exclusive, strong connections in each check-in location. Additionally, the team ran two new wired connections to the Peabody Esplanade for the registers provided by the Commodore Card Office.
In preparation for Senior Day and Commencement activities, Network Services set up a private wireless network on Alumni Lawn for social outreach during Commencement at Web Communications' request by installing two new wireless access points on the exterior of Alumni Hall to serve Alumni Lawn. Unfortunately, the celebration was moved inside to Memorial Gym due to inclement weather; however, this installation will be available for future years.
Network Services also provided network connectivity for the livestream of Commencement to ensure that those who could not physically come to graduation did not have to miss the event completely. In order to provide the best video streaming possible, the team coordinated testing with Web Communications and the streaming service provider for both Alumni Lawn and Memorial Gym locations. The team installed a temporary wireless access point following a last-minute request to allow photos to be shared in real time during both Senior Day and Commencement.
