Early Decision I successful within Amazon Web Services cloud environment

VUIT Open Systems Applications and Cloud Services is proud to announce that 2016 Early Decision I reveal was a great success. At 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2016, the Personalized URL site successfully served more than 30,000 requests with no errors. In March 2016, the VUIT Cloud Services team had worked in collaboration with both University Web Communications and VUIT Application Development and Integration to migrate this workload to Amazon Web Services prior to last year's Regular Decision reveal.

The support strategy required for a reveal involves scaling up resources significantly to handle the anticipated load. Even though the event is short in duration, it produces 10 to 100 times more traffic than usual. Cloud technology empowers VUIT to accomplish this kind of dynamic scaling at very little additional cost.

The operation for VUIT Cloud Services to double the central processing unit (CPU) and memory capacity took less than 30 minutes to complete and only added $7.50 to the total monthly spend. Upon the reveal's completion, VUIT returned resources to normal levels. VUIT Cloud Services continues to explore new opportunities and innovative cloud offerings to transform the way the university conducts business.
