What is Skype?

Skype is software that enables you to make calls anywhere in the world. Skype uses innovative P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you with other users.

How do I get a Skype account?

Go to the Skype website for a free download of the client.

Why would I use the Vanderbilt Skype gateway?

If you are a Skype user, you can make free calls to other Skype account users.  Calls to non-Skype account users or 'land lines' has a charge.  By creating this gateway, you can call Vanderbilt via your Skype account and avoid any costs.

 

Am I required to install the Skype client in order to receive calls through the Skype gateway?

No.  The Vanderbilt Skype Gateway handles the processing of calls to Vanderbilt.

 

What does it cost?

Vanderbilt will not charge for access to the gateway, and Skype accounts are free.  There can be Skype charges for calls to non-Skype accounts, thus the reason for this service. 

 

Can I make a video call to the Vanderbilt Skype gateway?

No, this is an audio only gateway.

 

If my department wants to have Skype calls come directly to a Vanderbilt telephone in my office, is this possible?

Yes, the Skype gateway has additional account space to accommodate Skype direct connetions to departments.  Please contact your Customer Relationship Manager for assistance.

 

What if my department's main number is answered by a caller's menu (press 1, 2, etc..)?

You will need to point the Skype account to a number that is physically answered versus being answered by a caller's menu.

 

Is there a limit to the number of concurrent Skype calls into the Vanderbilt gateway?

Yes, Information Technology Services is closely monitoring the gateway to make sure it can accommodate the Skype traffic.
